OnlyFans’ parent company, Fenix, has been fined £1.05 million for providing incorrect details about its user age verification process. The platform, known for adult content, claims all users must be at least 18 years old and uses facial age estimation technology to verify identities.
Initially, Fenix stated that the system flagged users appearing under 23, requiring them to submit additional ID for verification. However, it later revealed that the actual threshold was set at 20. This discrepancy led Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, to conclude that Fenix failed in its duty to provide accurate information.
Ofcom’s Enforcement Director, Suzanne Cater, emphasized the importance of truthful reporting, stating that regulators need precise details to ensure platforms comply with safety measures. The fine, reduced by 30% after Fenix accepted responsibility, will be directed to HM Treasury.
OnlyFans responded, acknowledging the significance of accurate reporting and expressing satisfaction with the resolution. The company also noted that Ofcom had previously closed an investigation into its age assurance practices.
As online platforms face increasing scrutiny, this case highlights the growing demand for transparency and accountability in digital content regulation.
