How Long Can You Keep Boiled Eggs in the Fridge?

Boiled eggs are a quick and easy way to get protein into your meals. Whether you’re adding them to your salad, making a sandwich, or just enjoying them with a pinch of salt, they are one of the simplest go-to snacks. Since they’re so easy to prepare, it’s common to boil a bunch of them at once. But how long can you store boiled eggs in the fridge without worrying about freshness?

Once eggs are boiled, they lose the natural protective layer found on raw eggs. That means they can spoil faster. According to food safety guidelines from the USDA, hard-boiled eggs can last for up to 7 days in the refrigerator if stored properly. It’s important to keep them at a cool temperature, ideally around 4°C (or 40°F).

If the eggs still have their shell, they stay fresh longer because the shell helps keep away bad smells and bacteria. Peeled eggs, on the other hand, should be eaten within 2 to 3 days. Without the shell, they dry out quickly and are more likely to go bad.

Never leave boiled eggs at room temperature for too long. If you’re not refrigerating them, they should be eaten within 1 to 2 hours. This is especially important in hot weather, as bacteria grow faster in heat.

To check if your boiled egg is still good to eat, there are a few simple tests you can do. First, smell the egg. A fresh boiled egg won’t have a strong odor. If it smells sour, rotten, or has a strange sulfur-like smell, throw it out. Next, look at the texture. If it feels slimy, rubbery, or off in any way, it’s not safe to eat. Discoloration is also a sign—it should not look green, pink, grey, or too dark. You can also try the float test: place the unpeeled egg in water. If it floats, it’s likely gone bad. If it sinks, it’s still okay to eat.

Boiled eggs are a great source of energy, easy to prepare, and ideal for meal prep. Just make sure you store them properly and check them before eating.
