Airbnb is shaking up the travel industry once again by adding luxury services to its platform. The redesigned app now lets users book personal chefs, in-home massages, personal trainers, and other premium services – whether they’re staying in an Airbnb or not. This bold move bridges the gap between vacation rentals and high-end hotels, giving travelers the best of worlds.
CEO Brian Chesky explains the shift: “People choose hotels for their services. People choose Airbnb’s for the space… now, we’re giving you the best of both words”. Starting in 260 cities, these add-ons begin at under $50, making luxury more accessible than ever. Options range from spa treatments to professional photographers and makeup artists, perfect for special occasions or simply elevating a getaway.
The update also expands Airbnb’s “Experiences” section, first launched in 2016, with even more unique activities. Travelers can now book exclusive outings like playing Volleyball with an Olympic athlete in Rio or spending a day with an NFL star. As luxury travel expert Anastasia Oriordan notes, “The benchmark for unique experiences is constantly moving” as seasoned travelers seek more personalized adventures.
This transformation comes at a pivotal time for Airbnb. While the platform has hosted over 2 billion guests since 2008, it faces challenges like increasing regulations on short – term rentals in some cities. The addition on premium services could help Airbnb stand out in a competitive market, especially as travel trends shift toward customization.
Industry analysts say these changes reflect what modern travelers want. “People aren’t just thinking about where to stay anymore – they’re designing entire trips around unique, tailored experiences”, says Gary Bowerman of Check-in Asia. With its new luxe offerings and one-of-a-kind activities, Airbnb is positioning itself as more than a rental platform – it’s becoming a full-service travel concierge.
