Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has shared that artificial intelligence will change the way the company works – and that it will lead to a smaller office workforce in the future. In a memo to employees, he asked staff to be curious about AI and get ready for major changes.
AI is already being used across almost every part of Amazon. Jassy says that as the technology improves, it will help the company become more efficient. As a result, some jobs will no longer be needed, while new types of roles will appear.
He explained that the shift won’t be immediate but will happen over the next few years. He also admitted that it’s hard to predict exactly how things will turn out, but fewer people will be doing some of today’s tasks. At the same time, new job roles will be created as AI grows.
Amazon joins other major tech companies that are increasing their focus on AI tools. Many businesses now use AI to write code, generate text, and complete tasks with little guidance. While this helps companies work faster, it’s also raising concerns about job cuts – especially in entry-level office roles.
Some tech leaders have warned that AI could eliminate up to half of all beginners white-collar jobs. Others, like AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, have expressed fears that AI may replace many kinds of intellectual work, not just the repetitive tasks. Hinton questions what new jobs would remain if AI can handle most thinking-based tasks.
Amazon is one of the world’s largest employers, with more than 1.5 million workers worldwide. Around 350,000 of them are in office roles. The rest work mainly in warehouses and logistics.
In his message, Jassy said Amazon is building AI tools that will soon help with everyday routines like shopping and small chores. He expects these tools to become common quickly and encouraged employees to embrace the changes. He also noted that over 500,000 sellers are already using Amazon’s AI to create product information, and advertisers are also benefiting from the company’s AI features.
