A woman from Dunfermline was left stunned after an unexpected error by Apple’s voice-to-text service turned a routine voicemail into a shocking message.
Louise Littlejohn, 66, received a call from a Lookers Land Rover garage inviting her to an event. However, when Apple’s AI-powered transcription converted the voicemail into a text, it mistakenly inserted an inappropriate reference to sex and an insult.
At first, she was shocked but later found the mix-up amusing. She noted that the garage was simply trying to sell cars, but instead, their message turned into something entirely different due to the AI’s mistake. Both Apple and the garage declined to comment on the incident.
Experts suggest that multiple factors contributed to the error. Background noise, the caller reading from a script, and the call quality may have confused the AI system. Some believe that the Scottish accent may have played a role, but advancements in voice technology have largely eliminated such issues under ideal conditions.
The message transcription error is not the first time Apple’s speech-to-text technology has come under scrutiny. Recently, users reported that Apple’s AI mistakenly transcribed the word “racist” as “Trump.” Apple also had to pause its AI-generated news summaries due to inaccuracies.
This incident highlights the challenges of AI-powered voice recognition and the need for better safeguards to prevent inappropriate or misleading transcriptions in the future.
