Bluesky Brings Private Bookmarks

Bluesky, the fast-growing social media platform, has finally introduced one of its most requested features – private bookmarks. Known as “Saved Posts”, this update gives users a simple way to save content without making it public.

The new bookmark icon now appears under every post, right next to the familiar heart button. Unlike likes, which remain visible to everyone, saved posts are private and can only be seen by you. Your saved posts are now easily accessible in the “Saved” tab in the main app menu.

Why private bookmarks matter

On social media, likes are often public, which doesn’t suit everyone. Sometimes people want to save posts for personal reasons or to revisit later without broadcasting their interest. For example:

  • Journalists can save posts as research without drawing attention.
  • Users can keep personal or sensitive content private.
  • People can create a curated list of posts without cluttering their public likes

This privacy – first feature makes bookmarking more flexible compared to likes, which can shape public perception of users.

A smarter way to save posts

On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), likes have becomes controversial, even leading to hidden like counts. Bluesky took a different approach by separating private saved posts from public likes. Since the AT Protocol doesn’t yet support private data, Bluesky stores bookmarks off-protocol, keeping them private in the same way direct messages are handled.

This shift could increase user engagement by letting people save posts without hesitation. It also replaces the workaround of replying with a pushpin emoji to “mark” posts – a common trick Bluesky users relied on before this update.

More updates for Bluesky users

The private bookmarks feature follows other recent updates, including:

  • Photo and video uploads
  • Feedback tools for custom feed creators
  • Starter Pack – a curated list of recommended people to follow

Bluesky is moving fast to meet user demands while balancing privacy, engagement, and ease of use. The addition of Saved Posts shows the platform’s focus on creating a more comfortable online space.
