The rock and metal community is mourning the tragic death of Blent Hinds, the former singer and guitarist of the Grammy-winning band Mastodon. Hinds, aged 51, died in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta late Wednesday night.
According to Atlanta Police, he was riding his Harley – Davidson when a BMW SUV failed to yield while turning. Hinds was found unresponsive at the scene, and an autopsy confirmed his cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries.
Remembering his legacy
Hinds was one of the founding members of Mastodon, which he started in 2000 alongside Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor. Over the years, Mastodon became one of the most respected names in heavy metal, blending ferocious riffs with progressive and sludge rock sounds.
The band released several highly acclaimed albums, including “Blood Mountain” in 2006, their first to break into the Top 40 on the Billboard 200. Their success grew with chart-topping albums like “Once More ’round the Sun” (2014) and “Emperor of Sand” (2017).
In 2017, Mastodon won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the track “Sultan’s Curse.” Rolling Stone also praised their 2011 release “The Hunter,” calling it one of the best albums of the year.
A complicated departure
In March 2025, Hinds left Mastodon. While the official statement described the split as mutual, his Instagram comments hinted at tension between him and his bandmates. Despite this, the band expressed gratitude for his role in shaping their history and music.
Future plans cut short
At the time of his death, Hinds was preparing to tour Europe with his other project, Fiend Without a Face. Fans had been looking forward to seeing his return to the stage, but his sudden passing has left a deep void in the world of rock and metal.
A lasting impact
Brent Hinds will be remembered not only for his technical skill and creativity but also for his fearless approach to music. His contributions helped Mastodon earn worldwide recognition and inspired countless fans and musicians across generations.
