Cheers Legend George Wendt Passes Away at 76

George Wendt, the actor best known as Norm Peterson from the popular TV show cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. He died peacefully in his sleep at home, his family confirmed.

George was known for his warm personality, both on and off screen. His family described him as a caring husband, loving father, and a loyal friend. He will be remembered by many who grew up watching him.

Wendt played Norm in all 275 episodes of Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993. His character was one of the most loved in the series. Every time Norm entered the bar, the other characters would shout his name. This became a famous and fun moment that fans still remember today.

He earned six Emmy nominations for his role and became a symbol of comfort and humor on the show. In 2024, Wendt reunited with his Cheers co-stars Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger at the 75th Emmy Awards.

George Wendt also acted in films like Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho. In 1991, he appeared as a father in Michael Jackson’s Black or White music video. He stayed active in Hollywood throughout his life, known for playing kind and funny roles.

Wendt was married to actress Bernadette Birkett since 1978. The couple had three children. He was also the uncle of actor Jason Sudeikis, who stars in the hit show Ted Lasso.

Many stars shared their love and sadness. Ted Danson said he was heartbroken. “It will take me a long time to accept this. I love you, Georgie,” he said.

Cheers Boston, the real bar that inspired the show, posted a touching tribute. They shared a photo of Norm’s seat and thanked George for the joy he brought. “You’ll always have a stool at our bar,” they wrote.

Actress Melissa Joan Hart also shared her memories. She worked with Wendt on Sabrina the Teenage Witch and said he was always kind and professional. “Heaven just got a little funnier,” she wrote.

George Wendt brought laughter to millions. His character Norm was more than just a bar regular — he became a part of people’s lives. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, joy, and unforgettable TV moments.
