An airport in Florida is set to carry a new name: President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The state’s Republican – led legislature has approved a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport in honor of the current US president. The move adds to a growing list of efforts to stamp Trump’s name on landmarks across the country.
The Decision in Florida
State legislators voted in favor of the name change on Thursday. The bill now heads to Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law. Once approved, the official renaming will require final clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airport sits in Palm Beach, just minutes away from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. It serves as a major gateway for travelers visiting the wealthy coastal community known for its beaches and luxury homes.
A Pattern of Renaming Efforts
This is not the first attempt to put Trump’s name on public institutions. The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, underwent a similar change in December. Trump’s handpicked board voted to rebrand the arts complex as the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” The original center was built as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.
Trump has also floated the idea of renaming other major landmarks. According to US media reports, he previously sought to put his name on New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport. Both efforts were ultimately rejected.
What Comes Next
The Florida airport renaming still faces federal review. The FAA must sign off before any official change takes effect. If approved, signs, maps, and airport material will need to be updated to reflect the new name.
Beyond Buildings: A Coin in the Works
The push to honor Trump extends beyond infrastructure. The Treasury Department has confirmed that drafts have been prepared for a commemorative $1 coin featuring Trump’s image. This is notable because federal law generally prohibits displaying the image of a sitting or living president on currency. It remains unclear how or if that legal barrier will be addressed.
From airports to arts centers to coins, efforts to put Trump’s name and face on public institutions are moving forward. The Florida airport renaming is the latest example. While some attempts have succeeded, others have stalled. What is clear is that the campaign to leave a lasting mark on the country’s physical and symbolic landscape continues.
