Google Chrome Could Get a Built-In AI Assistant

Google is reportedly testing a major new feature that would bring a powerful AI assistant directly inside the Chrome browser. This experimental tool, spotted in an early developer build, would allow users to ask questions, summarize webpages, and even generate images without ever leaving their current browser window.

Traditionally, using Google’s AI features required visiting the search page. This new “AI Mode” would change that, opening as a self-contained panel within Chrome. Users could type queries, upload files like PDFs or images, and get answers directly on the same page. The AI would also be able to read the content of other open browser tabs to provide summaries or answer specific questions about them.

Reports suggest the feature also includes an experimental image generator. While still in a very early and incomplete stage—with some placeholder text and bugs—the integration represents a significant step. It points toward a future where AI is woven directly into the browsing experience, making it a seamless tool for research, content creation, and productivity without constantly switching tabs or apps.
