Google Delays Switch from Assistant to Gemini on Phones

Google has updated its plans to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android smartphones, confirming that the transition will take longer than first expected. Instead of completing the switch by the end of this year, the company now aims to continue the upgrade process into 2026 to make sure users experience a smooth and reliable change.

Since the launch of Gemini, Google has slowly moved many Assistant features to its new AI system. Tasks such as controlling smart devices, managing daily actions, and responding to voice commands have already begun shifting to Gemini for many users. However, Google says more time is needed to fully replace Assistant across most Android phones without disrupting everyday use.

The company also plans to expand Gemini beyond smartphones. In the coming months, Gemini will be introduced on tablets, cars, smartwatches, headphones, and other connected devices. Home products like smart speakers, displays, and TVs are also set to receive the Gemini – powered experience. By 2026, Google Assistant is expected to be unavailable on most mobile devices and removed from app stores.

Google has encouraged users to share feedback during this transition, as user input will help refine features and improve performance. More details about the exact rollout timeline are expected soon.

Gemini was first announced for Android smartphones in 2024 and is now available in over 200 countries, supporting more than 40 languages. The app already handles common tasks like playing music, setting reminders, running timers, and working directly from the lock screen. Google has also added new AI tools, including video verification features, to strengthen Gemini’s capabilities.

This move signals Google’s long – term focus on AI driven assistance, positioning Gemini as the future of voice and smart support across the Android ecosystem.
