Google Gemini Now Works from Your iPhone’s Lock Screen

Google Gemini users can now access the AI chatbot directly from the iPhone lock screen, thanks to a new update. This feature, first noticed by 9to5Google, allows users to launch Gemini Live, Google’s real-time voice assistant, without unlocking their phone. By adding a Gemini widget to the lock screen, iPhone users can quickly interact with the AI assistant.

With Apple’s AI-powered Siri upgrade reportedly delayed until 2027, other AI companies are stepping in to fill the gap. This update gives iPhone users a chance to explore AI-powered voice assistants before Apple’s version arrives.

Similar to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, the Gemini app now lets users access AI voice features from the lock screen. Alongside Gemini Live, the latest update introduces other lock screen widgets, including:

  • A shortcut for taking pictures with the iPhone camera and uploading them to Gemini
  • A quick-access button for setting reminders and calendar events
  • A direct link to start a text chat with Gemini

Additionally, Google has revealed that starting in March, Gemini users on Android will be able to ask the AI chatbot questions about videos and on-screen content, receiving real-time responses. These advanced AI features were initially introduced as part of Project Astra, Google DeepMind’s multimodal AI project, and will be available first for Gemini Advanced subscribers on the $20-per-month plan.
