Apple has added a fun new feature to its iPhones with the iOS 18.4 update — a new Sketch style in the Image Playground app. While the update mainly focused on Visual Intelligence for iPhone 15 Pro models, this creative feature is one many users may have missed.
The Sketch style is now available in the Image Playground app and gives a new way to turn ideas into visual art. Apple describes this style as detailed, colorful, and technical, offering a hand-drawn look with real-life detail. Like the other styles, Sketch uses Apple Intelligence to turn simple prompts into artwork, all done using on-device AI.
Before this update, Image Playground had two styles — Animation and Illustration. The Sketch style now brings the total to three. Though Apple first showed all three at WWDC 2024, only the first two made it to users with the iOS 18.2 release. Now, the feature set feels complete with Sketch finally included.
Image Playground is a free app on the App Store that lets users create images with the help of generative AI. You can pick a style, give a short description, and see your idea come to life as an image. The app also includes Genmoji, which lets you make custom emojis in the same way. These creations can be used in Messages, Notes, and the iWork suite like Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.
Another tool in the app is Image Wand. This handy feature can take a quick sketch or written note in the Notes app and turn it into a matching image. It works similarly to the Sketch to Image feature on Samsung Galaxy devices. Whether typed or handwritten, the Image Wand can use AI to generate a matching image, all without needing the internet.
With this latest update, Apple makes it easier for users to turn their ideas into creative digital art. If you’re using iOS 18.4, check out Image Playground to try out the new Sketch style and see your thoughts become art.
