Owen Cooper Makes History at Emmys 2025

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards night was full of surprises, records, and emotional moments. The spotlight shined on British teen actor Owen Cooper, who at just 15 years old became the youngest male ever to win an Emmy Award.

Owen Cooper’s Record-Breaking Moment

Cooper won Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his powerful role as Jamie Miller, a schoolboy accused of murder, in Netflix’s hit drama Adolescence.
In his heartfelt speech, Cooper said the experience felt “surreal,” and reminded young people that stepping out of their comfort zones can make anything possible. He thanked his family, co-stars, and the production team, saying the award truly belonged to everyone behind the camera.

His win broke a record previously held since 1973, when Scott Jacoby won at age 16. Cooper now joins the list of youngest Emmy winners alongside Roxana Zal (14) and Bindi Irwin (9, Daytime Emmy).

Big Wins for Adolescence

The night was also a huge success for Adolescence, which walked away with four major awards:

  • Best Limited Series
  • Best Directing
  • Best Writing
  • Acting prizes for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Owen Cooper

The drama was widely praised for exploring the deep impact of smartphones and social media on teenagers.

Stephen Graham, who won Best Lead Actor, called his journey “a dream come true,” while co-star Erin Doherty celebrated her win as Best Supporting Actress and described the show as “the definition of a team effort.”

Comedy Record for The Studio

Hollywood satire The Studio also made history, breaking the record for the most comedy wins in a single season. The series earned 13 awards in total, including Best Actor for its creator, Seth Rogen. Rogen joked about never winning anything before and compared his Emmy to a bowling trophy he once bought second-hand.

Drama Highlights

The medical drama The Pitt was crowned Best Drama Series. Stars Katherine LaNasa and Noah Wyle also took home individual acting awards.
Meanwhile, Severance continued its streak of success with Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman winning acting prizes. Tillman became the first Black actor to win Best Supporting Actor in a drama, dedicating his win to his mother.

Other Major Wins

  • Jean Smart repeated her win for Best Actress in a Comedy for Hacks
  • Hannah Einbinder, also from Hacks, won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy
  • The Traitors US won Best Reality Competition Program
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver earned two prizes, including Best Scripted Variety Series
  • Andor won Best Drama Writing
  • Slow Horses secured a directing award

Stephen Colbert’s Farewell

Stephen Colbert won Best Talk Series shortly after the announcement of The Late Show’s cancellation. He received a standing ovation and humorously asked if anyone was hiring, noting that his 200 staff members would soon be available for work.

A Night of Joy and Giving

The ceremony ended on a high note with a $250,000 donation to The Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Host Nate Bargatze kept the evening lively by linking speech times to charity contributions, making the event entertaining while supporting a good cause.
