Snowflake Buys Crunchy Data to Boost AI and Postgres Power

Snowflake is making moves in the competitive data platform space with its planned acquisition of Crunchy Data, a PostgreSQL specialist. While the cloud data giant hasn’t confirmed the reported $250 million price tag, this purchase represents Snowflake’s latest push to strengthen its enterprise data offerings for the AI era.

The deal follows a flurry of similar acquisitions in recent weeks, including Salesforce’s purchase of Informatica and ServiceNow’s acquisition pf Data World. Crunchy Data brings 13 years of expertise in PostgreSQL – the popular open-source database system used by major clients like UPS and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

This acquisition will enable Snowflake to launch Snowflake Postgres, an enterprise-grade PostgreSQL solution that expands the company’s AI Data Cloud capabilities. According to Snowflake’s SVP of Engineering Vivek Raghunathan, the move addresses a $350 billion market opportunity by helping customers integrate Postgres with Snowflake’s platform.

The technology is expected to enter private preview soon, marking Snowflake’s continued investment in data management following last year’s acquisition of Datavolo. As AI adoption accelerates, Snowflake appears focused on providing comprehensive data solutions that support AI agent development and deployment.
