Spotify is reporting significant success after implementing external payment links in its iOS app, marking one of the first major wins in the ongoing battle over App Store payment policies. The music streaming giant revealed in a legal filing that its updated iOS app, which now directs users to web-based payment options, has already driven a noticeable increase in Premium subscriptions.
The change comes after a U.S. District Court ruling forced Apple to allow American developers to inform users about alternative payment methods that bypass Apple’s commission system. Spotify quickly capitalized on this decision, updating its app to clearly display subscription prices and include links to its website for purchases. The company also introduced direct audiobook purchases through this new payment pathway.
According to Spotify’s internal data, the new payment options have created a “significant increase” in iOS users upgrading to Premium subscriptions compared to Android, where such information was already available. The company noted that conversion rates remained steady on Android while spiking on iOS since the changes were implemented.
This development comes as part of the broader legal battle between Apple and Epic Games, with Spotify filing an amicus brief in support of Epic’s position. While Apple continues to appeal the court’s decision and seeks to revert to its previous policies during the appeals process, the Ninth Circuit Court has so far allowed the new rules to remain in effect.
The successful implementation by Spotify serves as an early test case for how alternative payment systems might reshape the app economy, potentially saving developers millions in commission fees while offering consumers more payment options and potentially lower prices.
