WhatsApp is working on a new feature for Android that gives users more control over group chat notifications. The update, spotted in the beta version, introduces an option to mute @everyone mentions, which often trigger notification for all members in a group.
What Is the Mute Everyone Mentions Feature?
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the option was seen in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1. A new “Mute @everyone” toggle appears under the notification settings. It is switched off by default but can be manually activated by users who want to avoid unnecessary alerts.
Why Is This Feature Important?
The current @everyone mention allows any group member, not just admins, to notify the entire group at once. While useful for announcements, it can also be misused and cause unwanted disruptions. With the mute option, users will have the flexibility to silence these notifications while still keeping the group active.
How Will It Work?
Once rolled out, Android users will be able to:
- Suppress notifications triggered by @everyone mentions.
- Choose whether to continue receiving them even if the group is muted.
- Personalize group chats with more control over alerts.
This new update is still under development, but it highlights WhatsApp’s effort to improve user experience by reducing spam and giving people more freedom to manage notifications.
WhatsApp’s upcoming mute @everyone option for Android could make group chats less overwhelming. By allowing users to silence mass mentions, the app adds a simple yet effective layer of personalization to notifications.
