Keeping your Google account secure is essential, and your linked phone number plays a key role. This number is used for vital security alerts, two – factor authentication, and account recovery if you ever get locked out. If you change your phone number, updating it with Google immediately is crucial to maintain your account’s security and ensure you never lose access.
The process to update your number is straightforward. First, go to your Google Account management page. You can do this by visiting myaccount.google.com and signing in, or by opening the Gmail app, tapping your profile picture, and selecting “Manage your Google Account.”
Once you are in your account settings, navigate to the “Personal info” section. From there, find and select “Contact info” and then “Phone number”. Yu will see your currently linked number. To change it, tap the edit icon, which often looks like a pencil. Google will ask you to verify your identity by entering your password.
After verification, you can enter your new phone number. Google will send a verification code to this new number via SMS. Enter that code on the website to confirm you have access to the phone. Once completed, your new number will be successfully linked for security and recovery purposes. Don’t forget to delete the old number from your account to avoid any confusion.
It is important to note that after this change, Google may take up to a week to fully activate the new number for sensitive actions like changing your password. Also, remember that updating your number in your main Google Account does not automatically change it in every Google service. You may need to manually update your phone number in other apps like Google Calendar or Chrome separetely.
