You Tube has introduced a new feature that helps creators protect their identity from being copied or faked using artificial intelligence. The new Likeness Detection Tool can identify when someone’s face or voice is being used in an AI-generated video. It gives creators more control over their content and helps reduce misleading or fake videos on the platform.
What Is the Likeness Detection Tool?
The Likeness Detection Tool was first tested with a small group of creators but is now rolling out to everyone in the YouTube Partner program. This tool uses advanced biometric technology to detect if a creator’s face or voice appears in videos without permission.
If a creator finds an unauthorized video that imitates their likeness, they can submit a removal request for YouTube to review. The tool is available in the Content Detection section of YouTube Studio, next to the Copyright option. A new Likeness (Beta) feature allows creators to manage and track such cases easily.
How to Sign Up for the Feature
To use YouTube’s Likeness Detection Tool, creators need to complete a few steps;
1. Agree to YouTube’s terms for using biometric technology.
2. Upload a valid photo ID and a short video of their face for verification.
3. Wait up to five days for YouTube to review and approve the setup.
Once verified, the system will start monitoring YouTube for any AI-generated content that imitates the creator’s appearance or voice.
How YouTube Handles Your Data
YouTube assures creators that all collected data is stored securely. The system creates a unique ID for each creator’s video and face data. This includes the person’s full legal name, voice, and facial templates. The information is stored for up to three years after the creator’s last sign-in and is handled under Google’s strict privacy policies.
Creators can opt out of the program anytime from the Manage Likeness Detection tab in YouTube Studio. Once they do, all related data is permanently deleted.
Why This Update Matters
As AI-generated videos and deepfakes become more common, YouTube’s new tool is a big step toward protecting creators’ identities. It helps ensure that creators can maintain trust with their audience while keeping control over how their image and voice are used online.
