Is Eating After Sunset Making You Gain Weight? Here’s The Truth

Many people worry about weight gain and try to eat clean, avoid junk food, and maintain a balanced diet. But one factor often overlooked is meal timing. A common belief is that eating after sunset leads to weight gain. But is this fact or just another diet myth? Let’s find out what experts say.

Eating late at night does not directly cause weight gain, but it can affect digestion and overall health. Nutritionist Amita Gadre explains that if you eat around 9:30 PM and sleep by 10 PM, your body doesn’t get enough time to digest food properly. This can lead to acid reflux, bloating, and other digestive issues. The key reason behind the advice to eat early is to allow proper digestion before bedtime.

Experts recommend eating dinner between 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. According to nutritionist Simran Vohra, eating before 9 PM helps the body digest food efficiently, promotes better sleep, and optimizes calorie use. A timely dinner supports overall metabolism and gut health.

If eating late is unavoidable, making smart food choices can help minimize its effects. Here are some tips:

  • Include Protein: Foods like grilled chicken, lentils, tofu, and leafy greens keep you full and aid digestion.
  • Choose Low-Carb Meals: Light and easy-to-digest foods such as paneer, beans, and lean meats help prevent bloating and sluggishness.
  • Reduce Salt Intake: Eating too much salt at night can cause water retention and put stress on the heart.
  • Limit Curd Consumption: Ayurveda suggests avoiding curd at night, as it can cause mucus buildup and digestion issues.
  • Eat in Moderation: The digestive system slows down at night, so smaller portions prevent bloating and discomfort.

A balanced approach to meal timing, portion size, and food choices can support digestion and overall health. Instead of worrying about the time of your meal, focus on what you eat and how it affects your body.
