TikTok is Back in the US: What’s Next?

TikTok has officially returned to the Apple and Google app stores in the United States after a temporary removal. The app, which has over 170 million American users, faced a potential ban due to national security concerns. However, former President Donald Trump granted an extension, allowing TikTok more time to comply with new regulations.

Why Was TikTok Removed?

The US government had passed a law requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell its US operations to avoid an outright ban. The decision was driven by concerns over data security and possible foreign influence. While China and TikTok denied these allegations, the law gained bipartisan support in Congress and was upheld by the Supreme Court.

Trump’s Changing Stance on TikTok

During his first term, Trump supported banning TikTok. However, his opinion appeared to shift during the 2024 presidential race. He acknowledged the app’s impact, citing the billions of views his videos received. Following his election victory, TikTok’s CEO, Shou Chew, met with Trump, and the app even sent a message to users thanking him for its return.

What’s Next for TikTok?

Trump has suggested a potential compromise, proposing that the app be jointly owned. He also mentioned possible buyers, including Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, Tesla’s Elon Musk, and billionaire investor Kevin O’Leary. Even YouTube star MrBeast expressed interest after investors reached out to him.

With TikTok back in US app stores, its future remains uncertain. Whether ByteDance will sell the platform or find another solution is still unclear, but for now, American users can continue enjoying the app.
