Teenager Jakub Mensik delivered a shocking performance by defeating Novak Djokovic to claim his first ATP Tour title at the Miami Open. The 19-year-old Czech beat the 24-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4), denying Djokovic his 100th career title.
Djokovic, aiming to become only the third player in the Open Era to reach 100 ATP singles titles, was outplayed by Mensik, who was just 10 months old when Djokovic won his first title in 2006. This victory makes Mensik one of the youngest Masters 1000 champions, following Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal.
A New Tennis Star on the Rise
Mensik, now ranked 24th in the world, has shown immense talent with his powerful serve and strong backhand. His journey to the Miami title was nothing short of incredible, as he defeated three top-10 players, including Djokovic, Jack Draper, and Taylor Fritz.
Mensik shared an emotional moment in his victory speech, recalling how he almost withdrew from the tournament due to a knee injury. “One hour before my first match, I was ready to pull out. I was lucky the referee was having lunch,” he said, crediting his physiotherapist for helping him recover in time.
Djokovic Struggles in Tough Conditions
The Miami final saw an intense battle, played in humid conditions with temperatures testing both players. Djokovic, at 37 years old, struggled early on, falling twice and even using sawdust for a better grip due to the humidity. His right eye swelling also added to the difficulties.
Mensik took advantage, breaking Djokovic early and maintaining control with powerful serves. Although Djokovic fought back, he couldn’t find his rhythm in the crucial tie-breaks, allowing Mensik to secure victory.
Despite the loss, Djokovic remained gracious, admitting, “It hurts to say, but you were better today.” He also joked, “Maybe next time, you’ll let me win one.”
What’s Next for Mensik and Djokovic?
Mensik’s win in Miami marks a huge step in his career, proving he is a rising star in the tennis world. His ranking jump to 24th reflects his rapid progress, and he is now one to watch in future tournaments.
For Djokovic, the wait for his 100th ATP title continues. However, under coach Andy Murray, his serve has shown improvement, and fans expect him to bounce back stronger in the upcoming tournaments.
