Why Fewer People Are Visiting McDonald’s in 2025

McDonald’s has been its biggest fall in US sales since the pandemic, as more people are worried about the economy. In early 2025, visits to McDonald’s drooped even though the company launched promotions and teamed up with the Minecraft movie. The drop in visits came as the US economy shrank for the first time since 2022, falling by 0.3% in the first quarter.

The company said many customers, especially those with lower incomes, are pulling back due to rising prices. CEO Chris Kempczinski said that people are feeling uncertain about the future and are cutting back on non-essential spending. Despite this, he believes McDonald’s has the experience and strength to get through tough times and even grow its market share.

The 3.6% sales decline in US stores is the steepest since the second quarter of 2020, when lockdowns kept people at home. Globally, McDonald’s sales fell by 1%, though markets like Japan, Australia, and the Middle East showed growth.

This sales dip comes as many businesses are reaching to new trade policies under President Trump. His tariffs have caused confusion among companies and consumers. Some, like DHL and Intel, have warned of rising costs, while others, like Adidas, expect price hikes on products in the US.

President Trump said the economic slowdown is temporary and blamed it on the previous administration. He asked for more time to make changes work. Economists, however, say higher prices and possible job losses could follow in the short term as companies adjust.

McDonald’s says it will stay focused on offering value, even as shoppers become more cautions. The company hopes its long history and strong brand will help it bounce back as the economy improves.
