Porsche Says Goodbye to 718 Models

Porsche is officially retiring its iconic petrol-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman models this October, marking the end of an era for the brand’s beloved mid-engine sports cars. Production will cease completely after October, following their earlier removal from Porsche’s Indian website and European markets due to regulatory challenges.

While limited-edition variants like the Boxster RS Spyder and Cayman GT4 RS will continue in Europe, mainstream models face discontinuation as Porsche prepares its electric successors. The automaker plans to reveal the electrified versions approximately one year later, with production expected to continue at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen plant using the same assembly lines that currently manufacture combustion-engine models.

This move follows Porsche’s broader electrification strategy, which will also see the Macan phased out by 2026. However, there may still be hope for traditional enthusiasts – former CFO Lutz Meschke hinted that originally planned electric models could potentially offer hybrid or combustion engine options, suggesting Porsche isn’t completely abandoning internal combustion technology just yet.

The retirement of the 718 series represents a significant shift for Porsche as it transitions toward an electric future, while carefully balancing the expectations of its performance-focused customer base.
