Arnold Made Me Sing Whatta Man 12 Times

Anastacia’s journey into music is full of unexpected turns, funny stories, and raw determination. From struggling to be signed to performing at some of the world’s biggest stages, her career is proof that persistence pays off.

Early TV Breakthrough

In 1998, Anastacia appeared on MTV’s reality show The Cut. Viewers first heard her powerful voice before even seeing her on screen. With her unique style – pigtails, bucket hat, tinted glasses, and a crop top – she stood out from the pop stars of the era.

Her performance of Not That Kind turned heads instantly. Phone lines lit up, and even Michael Jackson reportedly called to sign her. Suddenly, every label wanted her.

But this wasn’t always the case. Before the show, she was rejected repeatedly. Record labels struggled to market her bold voice and distinctive look. Some wanted her to sound like Celine Dion and look like Britney Spears. Others criticized her glasses, calling her a “sexy librarian.” What they didn’t understand was that Anastacia needed them – she’s worn prescription glasses since childhood.

That one TV performance changed everything. Anastacia finally became impossible to ignore.

Pre-Fame Days

Before her breakthrough, she worked as a receptionist in salons and offices. One job in a hair salon gave her a “first taste of glam life.” But she was always singing at Hollywood events and private functions.

At Steven Spielberg’s wedding, she sang a Celine Dion ballad. Years later, she met Spielberg again at a Malibu restaurant. When she reminded him, he laughed and said: “The wildest thing is that I’m still married to her.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Birthday Request

Not every celebrity story was as glamorous. Once, she was hired to sing at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s birthday party. He insisted she perform Whatta Man – not once, but 12 times in a row. Anastacia remembers laughing every time he asked her to repeat it.

Breakthrough Album

After years of effort, Anastacia finally recorded her debut album at the age of 32. Her team trimmed her age to 27 in press releases, but her music spoke louder than numbers.

Her first single, I’m Outta Love, exploded worldwide – reaching Top 10 in 19 countries and becoming Australia’s best-selling single of 2000. Her debut album, Not That Kind, went on to sell over 4 million copies globally.

Anniversary Tour

Now, 25 years later, Anastacia is celebrating the silver anniversary of her first album with a world tour. She performs to both longtime fans and a new generation who are experiencing her voice live for the first time.

She laughs about being “blacklisted” by US radio stations early in her career, which stopped her from touring at first. But once she launched her Live At Last tour in 2004, the demand was overwhelming. She filled arenas across Europe, proving her voice was best heard on stage.

A Different Kind of Fame

Unlike many pop stars, Anastacia never became a household name in the US. But she has no regrets. In fact, she appreciates the balance. During Nelson Mandela’s AIDS benefit concert in 2003, Beyoncé and Bono told her how they wished they could have more privacy. That moment made her grateful for her unique path.

A Career of Strength

Her positive outlook has also carried her through personal challenges, including surviving breast cancer twice. Today, her classic hits like I’m Outta Love, Left Outside Alone, and Paid My Dues are enjoying a revival thanks to social media.

Anastacia is now working on two new albums. While she doesn’t know when they’ll be released, she jokes that the music industry always says: “Don’t worry, you have time… Hurry up, we need it tomorrow.”

Closing Thoughts

Anastacia’s story shows how resilience, talent, and a little humor can turn rejection into a global career. From singing at Hollywood weddings to being asked to repeat Whatta Man 12 times by Arnold Schwarzenegger, her life has been anything but ordinary.
