At least 40 dead and 124 injured in crush at Vijay rally in India

A political rally in Tamil Nadu ended in a devastating tragedy, leaving at least 40 people dead and dozens more injured. The incident took place in Karur district during a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay, where tens of thousands of people gathered.

Officials confirmed that the victims included nine children, 17 women, and 13 men. More than 50 people are being treated in hospitals for injuries. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the crowed surged forward, causing people to faint and leaving many trapped. Vijay had to stop his speech as panic spread through the rally grounds.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced compensation of one million rupees for the families of those who lost their lives. He also confirmed that an inquiry will be conducted to investigate the cause of the crush. Police have filed a case against three senior leaders of Vijay’s TVK party, citing negligence and possible homicide charges. Authorities reported that the rally was originally approved for 10,000 people, but the actual turnout was more than double.

Families are grieving deeply. One man outside a hospital told reporters that he lost his nephew in the incident, while another child remains missing. Many relatives are still searching for loved ones.

Vijay expressed his grief through an online statement, saying his heart was broken and that he was in unbearable sorrow. He offered condolences to the families of the victims and prayers for a speedy recovery for the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sadness, calling the incident “deeply saddening” and offering condolences to the affected families.

Unfortunately, deadly crushes are not new in India. Similar tragedies have taken place at large gatherings this year, including religious festivals and sporting events, raising urgent concerns about safety and crowd management.
