Egg Heist: Over 100,000 Eggs Stolen Amid Rising Prices

In a shocking turn of events, thieves in Pennsylvania made off with over 100,000 eggs, valued at $40,000, from a delivery truck at Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle. This massive theft comes as egg prices continue to soar due to a widespread bird flu epidemic, making eggs more expensive than ever.

The rising cost of eggs has hit consumers hard, with prices increasing by over 65% in the past year. The USDA predicts another 20% hike in 2025, leaving households and businesses scrambling to adjust. The impact is already being felt in restaurants, with the national chain Waffle House recently introducing a $0.50 surcharge per egg due to the skyrocketing costs.

The bird flu outbreak, which began in 2022, has spread rapidly, affecting birds, cattle, and even some mammals. Though human infections remain rare, the epidemic has caused significant disruptions in egg supply, leading to empty shelves and frustrated shoppers.

Government data reveals that the average price of a carton of eggs jumped from $2.51 in December 2023 to $4.15 just a year later. With no immediate relief in sight, consumers may have to brace for even higher prices in the months ahead.

As egg prices continue to rise, thefts like this could become more common, highlighting the growing impact of inflation and supply chain issues. Stay informed and prepared as the egg crisis unfolds.
