Tens of thousands of Palestinians have begun returning to northern Gaza as Israel lifted its closure of the region for the first time since the early weeks of the ongoing war with Hamas. This development comes in the context of a fragile ceasefire, marking a significant moment for those who had fled their homes due to the conflict.
As crowds of people carried their belongings along a coastal highway, this return starkly contrasted the mass exodus that had occurred earlier in the war. Many had feared that Israel would make their departure permanent, but the recent opening brought a glimmer of hope to those longing to return home.
The reopening of the area was delayed for two days due to a dispute between Hamas and Israel regarding the order of hostages released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. However, mediators managed to resolve the issue, allowing the return to proceed.
Tragically, the situation in neighboring Lebanon escalated as Israeli forces opened fire on protesters demanding troop withdrawal, resulting in casualties. Concurrently, the White House announced an extension for Israeli troops to remain in southern Lebanon, citing security concerns regarding Hezbollah’s presence.
For many Palestinians, the return to their homes, despite the destruction, is a long-awaited relief. Those who had been living in makeshift shelters expressed joy as they reunited with family members. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the country’s commitment to maintaining the ceasefire, warning that any violations would not be tolerated. The ceasefire agreement also includes a plan for hostage releases, with Hamas expected to free 33 hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
