Recent police data has revealed a disturbing trend—hundreds of cases of child sexual abuse are being reported in hotels across the UK. According to figures from the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC), 92% of these cases involved physical contact, and 40% were recorded as rape. The majority of incidents took place in budget hotels, often located near transport hubs like train stations and motorways, making it easier for perpetrators to target victims.
Survivors have shared their painful experiences, highlighting how the privacy of hotel rooms allows such crimes to happen unnoticed. One victim described how predators take advantage of the “Do Not Disturb” sign to commit horrific acts without raising suspicion. Many hotels, especially budget chains, use self-service check-ins, which lets offenders book rooms without being questioned, further enabling the abuse.
Authorities are urging hotel staff to stay alert and recognize red flags, such as guests insisting on paying cash, refusing to show ID, or checking in with a nervous child who avoids eye contact. If anything seems suspicious, police recommend immediate reporting under Operation Makesafe, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child exploitation in hotels.
Although the majority of cases occur in budget hotels, experts warn that child sexual abuse can happen anywhere, from luxury resorts to roadside motels. The latest data shows that most victims are teenage girls, while nearly all suspects are adult men. However, police believe these figures are just the tip of the iceberg, as many cases go unreported.
The hospitality industry is now working with law enforcement to tackle this growing issue. UK Hospitality, in partnership with the Home Office and police, is providing hotels with essential training to identify and respond to potential child exploitation.
This alarming reality calls for urgent action—raising awareness, improving hotel security measures, and encouraging the public to report any signs of abuse. By working together, we can help protect vulnerable children and prevent these horrifying crimes from continuing in plain sight.
