Deadly Mystery Disease Spreads in Congo, Killing Over 50

A mysterious illness has emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), claiming over 50 lives in just five weeks. Health officials are deeply concerned as the disease spreads rapidly, with more than 1,096 reported cases and 60 fatalities in Western Congo.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two outbreaks have been identified in remote villages of Equateur province, with 431 cases and 53 deaths recorded as of February 16. The disease was first detected in three children who had consumed bat meat.

One of the most alarming aspects is how quickly it turns fatal. Medical experts report that many victims die within just 48 hours of showing symptoms. Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, called the situation “deeply concerning.”

Symptoms and Unknown Origin

Initial symptoms include fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding. As the disease progresses, patients experience diarrhea, body pain, extreme thirst, and joint pain. Reports indicate that children who died also suffered from continuous crying, nosebleeds, and vomiting blood.

Despite thorough testing, experts have ruled out known hemorrhagic viruses like Ebola, dengue, Marburg, and yellow fever. Researchers are now investigating whether the illness is caused by a new infection or exposure to toxic substances. A WHO spokesperson stated that efforts are ongoing to determine the cause and identify possible solutions.

Growing Concern and Global Response

Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as the rapid spread and high fatality rate pose a serious threat. More research is needed to uncover the source of this deadly disease and prevent further loss of life.
