ChatGPT for macOS Can Now Edit Code Directly

OpenAI has introduced a powerful new feature for macOS users—ChatGPT can now directly edit code in supported development environments like Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains. This update allows developers to streamline their workflow without constantly copying and pasting code.

Users can enable an “auto-apply” mode, letting ChatGPT make real-time code changes without additional confirmation. The feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers immediately, with Enterprise, Edu, and free users set to receive access next week. Windows users can also expect this functionality soon, as OpenAI confirmed it is in development.

This enhancement builds on OpenAI’s “work with apps” capability, which was launched in late 2024. By integrating directly into developer tools, ChatGPT now competes with AI-powered coding assistants like GitHub Copilot and Cursor. OpenAI is rumored to be working on an even more advanced AI-driven software engineering tool in the near future.

AI coding assistants are rapidly gaining popularity. According to a recent GitHub survey, most developers have integrated AI tools into their workflow. Y Combinator reports that a significant number of startups now rely on AI to generate the majority of their code.

However, AI-assisted coding also raises concerns. Studies suggest that while AI speeds up development and documentation, it can introduce security risks and increase debugging time. Developers must remain cautious about the reliability of AI-generated code. Despite these challenges, AI-powered tools like ChatGPT are transforming software development, making coding faster and more efficient.
