Jio Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India

In a significant move, Jio Platforms Limited has signed an agreement with SpaceX to offer Starlink’s broadband internet services in India. This partnership aims to enhance high-speed internet accessibility across the country, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The deal allows Jio to provide Starlink solutions through its retail outlets and online platforms, pending SpaceX receiving the necessary authorization to operate in India. This announcement follows a similar agreement made by Jio’s competitor, Bharti Airtel, with SpaceX.

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration, stating, “Our partnership with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment to seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability of high-speed internet in this AI-driven era.”

The agreement will allow both companies to explore how Starlink can enhance Jio’s offerings while Jio complements SpaceX’s services to consumers and businesses. Jio aims to leverage its position as the world’s largest mobile operator by data traffic alongside Starlink’s expertise in low Earth orbit satellite technology.

In addition to providing Starlink equipment, Jio will set up mechanisms for customer service, installation, and activation to ensure a smooth experience for users. This partnership reflects Jio’s commitment to making reliable internet accessible to enterprises, small businesses, and communities throughout India.

Starlink will complement existing Jio services like JioAirFiber and JioFiber, extending high-speed internet to challenging locations quickly and affordably. Both Jio and SpaceX are also exploring other areas of cooperation to further enhance India’s digital ecosystem.

Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, praised Jio’s dedication to improving connectivity in India and expressed eagerness to work together to provide Starlink’s high-speed internet services to more people and organizations.
