Google just unveiled powerful new security features for Android that could change how we protect our smartphones. Announced at the Android Show ahead of google I/O, these updates target two growing problems: sophisticated phone scams and device theft. The tech giant is rolling out multiple layers of protection that work together to keep users safe from modern digital threats.
One major focus is combatting phone scams that trick users into dangerous actions. Android will now block certain high-risk activities during calls from unknown numbers, like downloading unverified apps or granting accessibility permissions that could let scammers take control. Google Play Protect also can’t be disabled during suspicious calls, maintaining constant security scanning. The system even reminds users to stop screen sharing after calls end – a common scammer tactic to steal information.
For financial protection, Google is testing special warnings when users access banking apps while screen sharing with unknown contacts. UK banks will be first to implement this feature, which shows clear alerts and makes it easy to immediately stop sharing. Google Messages is getting smarter too, with enhanced AI that detects more scam types including crypto fraud and fake tech support.
Identify verification gets a boost with new QR code authentication in Google Contacts, ensuring you’re really messaging who you think you are. This becomes crucial if someone’s number gets hijacked through SIM swap attacks. The system will clearly show when verification fails, alerting users to potential impersonators.
For stolen devices, Google is introducing tougher safeguards. Critical settings changes will require biometric verification, especially when outside trusted locations. Factory resets become nearly impossible without the original owner’s credentials, making stolen phones far less valuable thieves. One-time passwords will also hide automatically when devices seem compromised.
Additional protections include better detection of malicious apps that try to hide, plus enhanced security for public figures through Advanced Protection Mode. Google is also launching a new Find My Hub features to help locate not just devices, but also important items and loved ones.
These comprehensive updates show Google’s commitment to staying ahead of digital criminals. As scams grow more sophisticated, Android’s built-in defenses are evolving to protect users at every level – from suspicious calls to physical device theft. The rollout begins with Android 16, bringing enterprise – grade security to everyday smartphone users.
