Telegram and xAI Team Up: Big Changes Coming to Your Chat App

In a major tech partnership, Telegram has announced it will integrate Elon Musk’s xAI technology into its messaging platform. The deal will bring xAI’s Grok assistant to Telegram’s massive user base of over 1 billion people, marking a significant move in the race to combine AI with social messaging.

Under the one-year agreement, Telegram will receive $300 million in cash and equity from xAI, plus half of all revenue from xAI subscriptions sold through its platform. Telegram founder Pavel Durov enthusiastically declared “Together, we win!” on social media, signaling high hopes for the collaboration. This follows similar AI integrations by competitors like Meta, which recently added AI features to WhatsApp despite some user skepticism.

Industry analysts note this reflects the growing trend of social platforms merging with AI capabilities. However, some question whether users actually want AI in their messaging apps. “People primarily use these platforms to connect with friends”, said media analysts Hanna Kahlert. “Adding AI could potentially disrupt that core experience”.

The partnership unites two controversial tech figures. Durov, who faced legal issues in France last year over content moderation concerns, has defended Telegram’s policies against criticism calling it a “dark web in your pocket”. Musk, meanwhile, continues expanding his tech empire while balancing political involvement and business ventures like Tesla, SpaceX, and now xAI.

Musk’s AI ambitions have been particularly noteworthy. After co-founding OpenAI and later departing amid disagreements, he’s positioned xAI as a competitor while making bold moves like attempting to buy OpenAI earlier this year. The telegram deal represents his latest effort to bring AI technology to mainstream platforms.

As messaging apps increasingly become battlegrounds for AI integration, this partnership could redefine how billions communicate – if users embrace the changes.
