Google Photos Gets Faster with Smarter AI Search

Google is upgrading how we search for memories in Google Photos. After facing issues with slow and unreliable results from its AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature, the company has now made important changes to improve both speed and accuracy.

The Ask Photos tool, introduced during Google’s I/O developer event, allows users to search using natural language like “show me beach trips” or “my white dog”. It uses Google’s Gemini AI to understand not just the image, but also tags, faces and dates. However, users had complaints: the tool was slow and often didn’t give the right results.

To fix this, Google paused the rollout of Ask Photos. The product team admitted that the tool needed improvements in speed, quality and user experience. Now, after a few weeks of updates, the feature is back – and better.

Google has blended its classic photo search with the AI-powered tool. That means quick results for simple searches like “dogs”, “birthday”, or “beach” will appear instantly, using the proven classic search system. At the same time, the AI continues working in the background to deliver more personalized, detailed results – like identifying specific pets by name or tracking the first time a family member appeared in your photos.

If you prefer, you can still switch back to the classic search manually.

The updated Ask Photos feature is now rolling out again to users in the United States. To use it, you must be 18 or older, set your Google account language to English, and turn on Face Groups – the feature that organizes faces of people and pets in your photo library.

With these updates, Google is making it easier and faster to find the photos that matter most.
