OpenAI Introduces Paid Video Generations on Sora

OpenAI is changing the way users access AI-generated videos on its Sora app for iOS. The free generation era is ending, as the company now allows users to buy extra video generations once they reach their daily limit.

Users can purchase 10 additional video generations for $4 (around Rs. 350). There’s no cap on purchases, so anyone can keep buying add-ons to create more videos.

Daily Rate Limits Explained

If you prefer not to pay, free tiers still exist:

  • Free users, ChatGPT Plus, and Teams subscribers can generate up to 30 videos per day.
  • Pro subscribers can generate up to 100 videos per day.

Anything beyond these limits requires purchasing the $4 add-on. OpenAI plans to lower rate limits in the future, which means fewer free videos will be available over time.

Reason Behind Monetisation

According to OpenAI, giving unlimited free AI video generations is unsustainable. By charging for extra videos, the company aims to support growth and ensure the platform remains reliable. Monetisation also targets power users, helping manage server demand while giving more users access to the app.

Cameo Feature and Copyright Monetisation

Sora’s Cameo feature, which lets users create videos of others or fictional characters using text prompts, will also see changes. Soon, creating videos of copyrighted characters or other users may require additional payment. OpenAI plans to share a portion of the revenue with creators and rightsholders, rewarding early platform adopters and intellectual property owners.

What This Means for Users

The days of free unlimited AI-generated videos are coming to an end. Users who want more than the daily limit can now pay $4 for 10 extra videos, while future updates may reduce free video access even further. This monetisation approach ensures the platform can continue growing while rewarding creators and managing demand.
