ChatGPT Becomes Fastest App to Reach 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

ChatGPT has become the fastest app ever to reach one billion monthly active users worldwide. The data comes from Sensor Tower, a market intelligence provider. The milestone highlights the growing mainstream adoption of generative AI, even as OpenAI faces increasing competition from rivals like Anthropic.

A Record-Breaking Pace

Within roughly three years of its launch, ChatGPT has grown to over one billion monthly active users. That pace exceeds the growth of established platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Google Maps. ChatGPT’s rise has been unprecedented in the consumer technology sector. Within just two months of its launch, it became the fastest-growing consumer app on record, surpassing 100 million users by January 2023.

A Slight Shift in User Behavior

Sensor Tower observed a modest shift in user behavior. Americans who downloaded Anthropic’s Claude app in early 2026 saw their ChatGPT engagement fall by about 5 percent in the following month compared to historical usage levels.

Claude remains much smaller than ChatGPT in absolute user numbers. But it is expanding at a

much faster rate. Claude attracted 56 million monthly active users globally in the current second quarter, with annual growth of roughly 640 percent. ChatGPT’s growth during the same period was only 62 percent.

ChatGPT’s Dominance Is Slipping

ChatGPT remains the leading AI app globally. But its grip on the market has loosened. Among six major AI apps tracked by Sensor Tower, ChatGPT accounted for 47 percent of worldwide downloads in the second quarter of 2026. That is down from 67 percent during the same period a year earlier.

Google’s Gemini remains the second-most downloaded AI app. But its share has also slipped. Gemini accounted for 22 percent of AI app downloads in the current quarter, down from a high of 34 percent in the final quarter of 2025.

Anthropic’s Rapid Rise

Anthropic’s Claude has emerged as the fastest-rising challenger. The chatbot captured 14 percent of AI app downloads in the current quarter. That is a sharp increase from just 1 percent in each quarter throughout 2025.

Sensor Tower said its data indicates that consumers are more willing to experiment with alternative AI platforms this year than in 2025.

ChatGPT has reached an incredible milestone. One billion users in record time. But the competition is catching up. Claude is growing faster. Gemini is still second. And users are shopping around. OpenAI remains the leader, but the race is getting tighter.
