US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday that deep mistrust between Washington and Tehran will not be resolved quickly. However, he expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations, noting that Iranian negotiators appear eager to reach a deal. “I feel very good about where we are,” Vance said during a Turning Point USA event.
The State of the Ceasefire
A fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran still has a week remaining. The war began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Iran responded with strikes on Israel and Gulf states that host US bases. The conflict has since claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, with Israeli attacks in Lebanon adding to the devastation.
Talks to Resume
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that negotiations to end the war could resume in Pakistan within the next two days. The announcement follows the collapse of weekend talks, which led Washington to impose a blockade on Iranian ports. Vance was directly involved in the recent negotiations held in Pakistan.
A Long Road Ahead
“There is a lot of, of course, mistrust between Iran and the United States of America,” Vance acknowledged. “You are not going to solve that problem overnight.” Despite the challenges, he noted that Iranian negotiators are committed to finding a resolution, giving him confidence in the direction of the discussions.
The Human Toll
The war has caused widespread destruction. US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli military operations in Lebanon have resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions from their homes. The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen as diplomatic efforts struggle to keep pace.
