Meta Adds New Scam Warnings on WhatsApp and Messenger to Protect Older Users

Meta is rolling out new safety features for WhatsApp and Messenger to help users spot and avoid online scams. These updates come as part of a broader effort to protect people, particularly older adults, from fraudulent schemes.

The company has already taken action against millions of scam accounts this year. Many of these scams target users across multiple platforms, including social media and dating apps.

What’s Changing in the Apps

You’ll now see new warnings in both WhatsApp and Massenger;

  • On WhatsApp, a warning appears when you try to share your screen during video calls with unknown contacts. Scammers often use this tactic to steal bank information to and security codes.
  • On Messenger, the app can now detect suspicious messages. When it finds one, it shows a clear warning and suggests you block or report the sender. the warning also explains common scam methods like fake job offers.

Why This Matters for Everyone

Scammers often target older adults because they may be less familiar with digital technology and more trusting online. These criminals might pretend to be tech support, romantic interests, or even family members in trouble. The results can be devastating, with people losing their savings to these sophisticated schemes.

While some wonder why these features took so long to arrive, they represent an important step forward. Meta is also joining forces with other major companies and law enforcement through the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center to better combat these scams.

These new tools provide simple, clear warnings that can help prevent financial loss and protect vulnerable users from online predators.
