TikTok Under Fire for Child Data Privacy

Canadian Investigation Raises Concerns

TikTok is facing fresh criticism in Canada after a privacy investigation found its efforts to stop children from using the app and protect their data were not enough. Despite the platform’s rule that it is not meant for users under 13, reports revealed that hundreds of thousands of Canadian children are active on TikTok each year.

Collection of Sensitive Data

Investigators discovered that TikTok had collected sensitive personal details from many children and used the information to deliver targeted ads and content. Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne said the platform gathers “vast” amounts of user data, including that of young users, which could expose children to harmful online influence.

TikTok Responds

TikTok stated it plans to introduce new measures to make the platform safer for Canadians but disputed parts of the findings. A spokesperson said the company remains committed to transparency and privacy, and Canadian officials had agreed to some proposals for strengthening protection.

Global Scrutiny on TikTok

This investigation adds to growing international pressure on TikTok. Governments in multiple regions have raised concerns about the app’s data privacy and security risks. In the US, discussions continue about transferring TikTok’s operations to American companies. In 2023, the European Commission ordered its staff to remove the app from official devices to strengthen cybersecurity.
