Trump Says Iran’s Enriched Uranium Will Be “Turned Over” to US or Destroyed

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Iran’s enriched uranium will be handed over to the United States for destruction. Alternatively, he said the material could be destroyed in place at an acceptable location with international witnesses. The decision, Trump said, will be made “in conjunction and collaboration” with Iran. The announcement signals a potential breakthrough in ceasefire negotiations between the two countries.

What Trump Said

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event.”

The statement confirms a New York Times report that Iran has agreed in principle to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. This would be part of a US-led framework aimed at ending the regional conflict.

Resolving a Key Difference

The announcement resolves a major sticking point between Washington and Tehran. CNN had reported that disagreements over nuclear program language and sanctions relief had slowed the finalization of a broader understanding. An official noted that the presence of an Iranian delegation in Qatar on Monday, including senior members of Tehran’s negotiating team, was viewed as a positive development. Qatar has played a key mediating role.

Trump’s Stance on a Deal

Trump has made clear that any accord with Tehran must be “great and meaningful.” He warned that if his conditions are not met, the administration will walk away entirely. On Truth Social, he posted, “The deal with Iran will either be a great and meaningful one, or there will be no deal.”

Iran’s Position

Iran has signaled that the two sides have reached conclusions on many topics. But Tehran has expressed concern over frequent changes in Washington’s positions. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said, “It is correct that we have reached conclusions on a large portion of the discussion topics, but to say that this means the signing of an imminent agreement is something no one can claim. The frequent changes in the positions of American officials complicate every negotiation.”

What Comes Next

The emerging framework appears to bring both sides closer to a deal. Iran appears willing to give up its enriched uranium. The US is offering a path to sanctions relief. But Trump’s insistence on a “great and meaningful” deal leaves little room for compromise. With Iranian negotiators in Qatar and Washington pushing for a final agreement, the coming days will be critical.
