Breathe Better: 5 Easy Yoga Poses for Stronger Lungs

Every year on September 25, World Lung Day reminds us of the importance of lung health and the rising impact of respiratory diseases. The day was first introduced in 2017 by the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 10 million people die each year due to lung – related conditions, making awareness and prevention more important than ever.

Lungs are vital for life. They don’t just help us breathe – they supply oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, protect us from infections, improve stamina, support heart health, and keep the brain active with a steady oxygen supply. Strong lungs can improve energy levels, focus, and overall quality of life.

One of the best natural ways to take care of your lungs is through yoga. Regular yoga practice strengthens respiratory muscles, improves lung function, boosts breathing control, and increases lung capacity. When combined with breathing exercises, yoga provides even greater benefits for healthy breathing.

Yoga poses to increase lung capacity

Here are some simple yoga poses you can add to your routine for stronger lungs:

1. Cobra Pose

Lie on your stomach with palms at your sides. Slowly lift your torso while keeping your lower body on the ground. Hold for 30 seconds, then release. Repeat 3-4 times daily.

2. Bow Pose

Lie on your stomach, blend your knees, and hold your ankles. Lift your chest and thighs together while keeping your pelvis flat. Hold for 4-5 breaths.

3. Camel Pose

Sit on your knees, place hands on your ankles, and arch your back while facing the ceiling. Hold for 10-20 seconds. Repeat for a few minutes.

4. Bridge Pose

Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips while pressing feet firmly into the ground. Hold for 4-8 breaths before returning to normal pposition.

5. Triangle Pose

Stand with legs apart, turn one foot outward, and bend sideways at the hip. Place one hand on your ankle or shin and stretch the order arm upward. Hold for a few breaths and repeat on the other side.

These poses help open up the chest, expand the lungs, and improve breathing efficiency. Adding breathing techniques like deep breathing or alternate nostril breathing can further enhance lung health.

This World Lung Day, take a small step towards healthier lungs by practicing yoga daily. Stronger lungs mean better energy, improved immunity, and a healthier life.
