Google is reportedly working on a new feature that could bridge the gap between Android and iPhone users during emergencies. According to recent findings, Android users may soon be able to share earthquake alerts directly with iPhone users, helping spread critical warnings faster and save more lives during seismic events.
The upcoming feature was spotted in an APK teardown of Google Play Services version 25.40.30, hinting at a new sharing option for earthquake alerts. When an alert appears on an Android phone, users may have the ability to forward it via messaging apps or social media, complete with the hashtag AndroidEarthquakeAlerts. This hashtag aims to make alerts more recognizable and easier to track in real time.
The Android Earthquake Alerts System (AEAS), first introduced in 2020 and launched in India in 2023, uses the accelerometers in Android smartphones to detect tremors. When multiple devices sense vibrations, Google’s system analyzes the crowdsourced data to determine if an earthquake is occurring. This early warning system has proven to be an important safety tool, giving users a few seconds of advance notice before the shaking begins.
While AEAS isn’t perfect and has faced occasional inaccuracies, it remains one of the most effective mobile-based earthquake detection systems in the world. It provides two types of alerts – a “Be Aware” warning for minor tremors and a “Take Action” alert for stronger quakes. The “Take Action” alert overrides Do Not Disturb settings, activates the screen, and plays a loud alarm sound to ensure users notice the warning immediately. Once the tremors stop, users can view recommended safety actions by tapping the Next Step option.
In addition to this development, the same APK teardown revealed another upcoming feature: a new Tools icon for Google’s Gemini overlay. This will reportedly allow quick access to creative tools such as Veo video functions and image generation. However, since these findings are based on unfinished code, there’s no guarantee the features will appear exactly as shown once released.
If launched, the new earthquake alert-sharing feature could make Android’s safety system more inclusive by allowing iPhone users to receive vital information instantly, enhancing public safety during natural disasters.
