Microsoft Shakes Up AI Game: Copilot Now Runs on Claude

In a significant move for the artificial intelligence landscape, Microsoft has announced it is integrating AI models from Anthropic, a key rival of its partner OpenAI, into its Copilot ecosystem. For the first time, Microsoft 365 Copilot users will have the option to power some features with models beyond those developed by OpenAI.

The tech giant is adding Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4.1 models. Initially, these new models will be available within two specific tools: the Researcher agent and the Microsoft Copilot Studio. This expansion introduces a new level of choice, allowing users to select the AI model that best suits their specific tasks. A simple model switcher will let users toggle between Claude and OpenAI options.

The Researcher agent is a powerful tool designed to tackle complex questions. It can analyze live internet trends, create detailed reports, and develop strategies by drawing on uploaded files, emails, and other data. The Copilot Studio, lets users build and customize their own AI agents for workflow automation and other advanced tasks. Now, creators can choose Claude models as the engine for these custom agents via a dropdown menu.

This development highlights Microsoft’s strategy of offering flexibility and embracing a multi – model approach, even as it continues its deep partnership with OpenAI. It gives users direct access to some of the most powerful AI models available today within the familiar Copilot environment.
