Reddit’s AI Move Aims at Google Users, Not Just Scrollers

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has identified two main types of users on the platform: Scrollers and Seekers engage with community discussions on topics they love, while Seekers are Reddit to find specific answers to their queries, often adding “Reddit” to their Google searchers for real opinions and advice.

To cater to Seekers, Reddit has introduced Reddit Answers, an AI – powered chatbot that provides direct answers and summaries from existing Reddit posts. Early feedback indicates that this feature is gaining popularity, with 1 million weekly active users since its beta launch in December.

Huffman explained that until now, Reddit had not effectively addressed the needs of seekers. He emphasized that these users are looking for answers, not community engagement at that moment. The Answers feature allows Reddit to better meet this demand.

Recently, Reddit expanded Answers to countries including Australia, the U.K., Canada and India. The feature currently appears in the app’s navigation bar but will be integrated more closely into the platform in 2025. One of the proposed enhancements is to incorporate Answers into the primary search box, allowing users to enter complete questions.

Huffman also mentioned plans to introduce Answers at the start of the user journey, helping new users discover relevant content easily. Another potential entry point could be through external search results, providing summarized answers from Reddit.

This move aims to reduce Reddit’s dependency on Google Search. Recent algorithm changes at Google caused fluctuations in Reddit’s user growth, leading to concerns among investors. Huffman acknowledged that while being open to Google Search increases visibility, it can also result in variability in user growth.

Despite the challenges, Reddit’s financial performance has impressed investors. The company reported revenue of $392.4 million, a 61% increase from last year, and a daily active user count of 108.1 million, up 31%. For the second quarter, Reddit expects revenue between $410 million and $430 million.
